Of special interest are the suggestions of how the book can be used across the curriculum, given by Sandra Teacher (starts at 41mins 40secs)

On Wednesday 30th June, JSCN and Swansea University hosted an online event for the launch of Heritage Detectives: a cross-curriculum, local history activity book for key stage 2.

Heritage Detectives has been designed to help teachers and pupils reflect both on their own heritage and Jewish heritage around them. Designed to be integrated throughout the curriculum, this book encourages pupils to get creative as they learn about respect and tolerance for other faiths and cultures through history, music, art, and geography.

Sandra Teacher, Experienced Teacher and Advisor to the Department of Education, recommends Heritage Detectives as a valuable resource for schools. Sandra was our keynote speaker at the launch. She highlights how Heritage Detectives can be used as the theme for all subjects to enrich “spiritual, social and cultural development”.

Spiritual development means raising confidence and self-esteem, helping young people to reach their potential. This resource inspires children to find out more about where they belong, what kind of culture they come from, about their families and grow in confidence as they go forward in the world.

Heritage Detectives supports social development, encouraging children to get on with their neighbours, have respect for others and find out about the different cultures, faith groups and world views in their schools and where they live.

This resource promotes cultural development by demonstrating how young people can explore their own cultures, to find out who they are and what contributes to their own sense of identity. These key themes are then used as a foundation to inspire them to learn more about other people and to encourage respect for others.
