ROOTS or ROUTES - a series of conversations taking place in different locations around the country during 2026-27

This thought-provoking evening explores how Jewish communities across the UK first established themselves, how they have flourished over generations, and how people today are thinking about the future —

— We hear from different communities whether that means strengthening Jewish life here in Britain or considering new possibilities elsewhere.

Through powerful personal stories and open discussion, our panel will explore questions many in our community are quietly asking:

  • What keeps us rooted here?
  • What challenges are shaping Jewish life in the UK today?
  • How do we build resilience, belonging, and hope for the next generation?
  • And for some, is there a route toward aliyah and a new chapter in Israel?

Unearthing the Holocaust at Treblinka

It was thought the horrors of the extermination camp at Treblinka had been so eradicated by the Nazis that its truth would never be known.

That is until archeologist Caroline Sturdy-Colls asked if she could conduct a forensic investigation of the site at Treblinka.

Her astonishing work has revealed meticulous detail, more than eighty years since the Nazis thought they had covered their tracks.

Professor Sturdy-Colls will be telling the story of her forensic investigation and its findings, in-conversation with Ed Horwich.

With special guest Trevor Avery, talking about his work with Caroline to reveal the history of the Windermere Boys.

Pam discusses her book about the history and stories behind Bournemouth’s Jewish Guest Houses and Hotels

The rise and decline of Bournemouth’s Jewish hotels and guest houses within the context of Anglo-Jewish history, the growth of Bournemouth as a premier resort, and the evolution of its Jewish community.

It explores the decline and changing nature of Bournemouth’s Jewish holiday trade before diving into hotel and guest house life — the food, religious activities, and entertainment. It concludes with  the hopes, achievements, and sorrows of generations of British Jews as they attempted to balance the goal of assimilation with the desire for a world of their own.

Throughout the book, the focus is on those who ran, staffed, and stayed in the kosher establishments, shedding light on the dynamics of the mainly family-run businesses.

Based largely on interviews, the text is replete with humorous and poignant memories and stories.
