My family lived in Wallasey Village between 1948 and 1965/6. We were members of the Falkland Road Synagogue. I can’t remember too many of the people who lived in the Seacombe/Egremont area. There was the Daniels family – Mr Daniels was a barber in Egremont. Mr and Mrs Cassell lived on the right-hand side of Elmswood Road across Brighton Street, across from Falkland Road. He seemed to run the Synagogue.Dr Shannon had a surgery attached to his house on Seabank Road towards New Brighton. If the moderator permits, email me at jeffmax@me.com for more information . I too am an Old Wallaseyan but was 3 years ahead of both you and Jack. He passed away around 30 years ago. As far I can remember he had a career in the law and may have been a barrister. He married a girl (Jackie) from Liverpool and I think they went to live in Southport. Anymore I do not know.

I am a primary school teacher doing some research into the Jewish community in Seacombe/ Egremont area where my school is located. My aim is to highlight the history of Jewish community in Wallasey, unknown to most.

Does anyone know of my old school pal Jack Cowan? He’d be around 76 yrs old now (same as me).
We were together at Wallasey Grammar School when I left in 1965 to join the Army.
His parents ran the Rock Point Hotel on New Brighton sea front.
If anyone knows of Jack, I’d love to get in touch again as I’ve not seen him in 60years!

The Jewish Community in 1909 began by forming a ‘Minyan’ (Bethel), together with a ‘Cheder’ (literally a schoolroom). It was moved from place to place until the time came to establish a Congregational Synagogue. Premises were obtained on Falkland Road. The building had a seating capacity of 250 people and was erected in 1868 and had used at various times by several different denominations, including the Baptists, and lastly before being acquired for a Synagogue. It was opened on 3rd September, 1911, the first year of Wallasey’s Incorporation as a Borough. The ceremony was performed by Mr B. Benas, sen., and the event was marked by full civic honour’s, the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs J.T. Chester) with members of the Corporation attending in state.
In the later years of the 20th Century Egremont Synagogue was demolished.

I lived there for 1979 and it was still there then I think it was demolished when i still lived there but i forget the year maybe around 1988
I live in 29 falkland road and I’m trying to find out when the synagogue would of been demolished?
