In the 2011 Census 0.1% of Scarborough’s population identified themselves as Jewish. But enough people in and around the surrounding area made their voices heard and now York Liberal Community are holding a Shabbat Service in the town. Possibly the first in living memory.
“A number of our members travel quite long distances to our services in York, including some from Scarborough, so we thought we’d hold a more local service for them and hopefully it will also act as a draw to introduce any other Jewish local people to each other.” Said Lilian Coulson, a member of the York shul.
Scarborough resident Yasmin King said “To have this happening on our doorstep is something special.”
The service takes place on Saturday 5th March.
