Middle East update Dec 2020

Moroccan ambassador to the UN Omar Hilale and Israel UM ambassador Gilad Erdan light a Hanukkah candle together

1. The peace deal announced between Israel and Morocco has been hailed as a miracle of Hanukkah. The two countries have pledged to set up liaison offices and will begin direct flights. A memorandum has been signed between the UAE and a planned Heritage Centre for MENA Jewry in Israel to increase ‘people-to-people cooperation’.

2. The Israel ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, said that Israel will press for a General Assembly Resolution calling for recognition of Jewish refugees from Arab countries. The announcement has been met with a Palestinian response accusing Israel of ‘outrageous fabrications’.

3. The UK minister for the Middle East, James Cleverly MP, has called for restitution to refugees on both sides. He was responding a parliamentary question by Stephen Crabb MP. All MPs were sent a letter by HARIF  (a newly-elected member of the Board of Deputies of British Jews) calling for recognition the Jewish refugees from Arab countries. 4  ’30 November’  commemorative online events have taken place all over the world to mark the exodus of Jewish refugees from Arab countries. Prayers for Jews buried in inaccessible cemeteries in Arab countries were recited by 15,000 synagogues and individuals around the world.
