The first formal community was formed in Derby at the end of the 19th century. A cemetery was also established.
A synagogue was founded in 1899 in a small terraced house at 24 Harriet Street and is recorded in the Jewish Year Book of 1907, with a later, more substantial building at 270 Burton Road from 1924. (ref: JCR-UK)
However the Derby Hebrew Congregation held its last service in 1986.
It was decided to hand over the community's Torah scrolls to surrounding congregations. Nottingham Liberal Synagogue was given one of them.
There are still a small number of Jewish people living in Derby.
Support is being sought to repair damaged headstones in the Jewish Cemetery.

Holocaust Memorial Day
The Derby group has been in place since 2001.
It is funded from private donations, and is supported by the Mayor of Derby, Derby Cathedral, local community groups, and individuals. There is a week of events surrounding the 27th January each year.
