The Art of Baking:
Bagels with Barb Taub (Arran); and
Challah with Linda Martin (Highlands)
Thursday 17th September: 10 a.m. to 12 or 1 pm.
Barb Taub, writer and self-defense bagel baker, invites you to bake your own authentic bagels along with her, using an extra-quick method.
Linda Martin has had a varied career and more recently has run a kosher Bed and Breakfast business at her retirement home in the Highlands. In contrast to Barb’s extra-quick method, she will be sharing why she is now exploring “autolysing” and the “slow rise”, and sharing some ideas for shaping your Rosh Hashana Challah.
No experience necessary. A list of ingredients will be sent to all who register – you’re welcome to bake along with Barb and Linda, or just watch!

The Giffnock Synagogue Memorial Parochet (Curtain) with Malcolm Lochhead, textile artist and designer. Emeritus Professor of Visual Design, Glasgow Caledonian University – in conversation with Marsha Gladstone, mother of Yoni Jesner and founder of the Yoni Jesner Foundation. A glimpse at a creative career and a creative process.
Yoni Jesner was killed in a suicide bombing in Jerusalem in 2002 and Marsha Gladstone wanted a way to remember him in the synagogue that had a special place in his heart.
Also: Lockdown Quilting, and the Aberdeen Mantles – with Debby Taylor (Aberdeen Hebrew Congregation)
After the presentations from 10 a.m. to 12 noon there’ll be a chance to stay online till 1 p.m. to meet Malcolm, hear about the rest of his career, chat to Marsha and Debby, and exchange your own embroidery and quilting stories.
Donations will be invited in aid of the Yoni Jesner Foundation
The Lockdown Quilt will be raffled at an event during Interfaith Scotland week, November 2020, in aid of the Aberdeen Synagogue roof appeal.
