After more than 20 years on BBC Radio Manchester, Jewish Hour broadcast its last programme in December 2012. The reasons given by the BBC were editorial and financial cuts.
An individual, from the Manchester community, made a legal challenge to this decision in court, but lost.
Yehuda Oppenheimer, Israel’s greatest accordionist and a superb composer, died on Saturday February 18th in Jerusalem, in his 86th year. His early life had parallels with that of Anne Frank. Born in Germany, his family moved to Holland in the 1930s, hoping to escape Nazi persecution, and when war came they spent 5 years in hiding. Unlike Anne Frank’s family, the Oppenheimers survived. After the war, Yehuda went to Israel, where he began a remarkable career in music, and brought great joy to the world through his music. His funeral, in keeping with Jewish tradition, is today.
