Lancaster & Lakes Jewish Community

We are a small, inclusive community of Jewish people, those of Jewish heritage and friends, open to all. We hold services for the High Holy Days and some other festivals at Lancaster University’s Jewish Rooms, plus numerous other cultural and social events throughout the year.

We have members across north Lancashire and Cumbria, including in Lancaster, Morecambe, Kendal, Carlisle, Garstang, Arnside, Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness.

Lancaster and Lakes Jewish Community welcome people from all strands of Judaism. It is not affiliated to any particular denomination.

We are a member of the cross-community Board of Deputies of British Jews and a member of the Jewish Small Communities Network. We have close links with Lancaster University Jewish Society.

We work each year in partnership with other organisations in the area, to put on events commemorating the International Holocaust Memorial Day.

Our activities
We hold services in the synagogue at Lancaster University Chaplaincy Centre including services for the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashonah, Kol Nidrei and Yom Kippur, and occasional Shabbat services throughout the year. We hold a regular Chanukah party and often a communal seder; we celebrate other festivals during the year and also hold social events and talks, both at the Jewish Rooms at Lancaster University, and in members’ homes. In 2021 during the pandemic we have held activities both on Zoom and outdoors.

    Hi,
My husband and I are making a permanent move to Penrith from Manchester – we bought our “second” home here ten years ago and have been travelling between the two but now ready to move completely.
Would it be possible please to add us to your mailing list? We have friends who attended your seder this year and have said how lovely it all was!

    Hello
We are a French family of 5 people (2 adults and 3 children) and we would like to know where we can stay for Shabbat pray and dîner on Friday 12/4.
We will stay at Lancaster and will have a car.
    Thank you for your reply.

  3. Hi Lancaster and Lakes Jewish Community is unaffiliated . We don’t have a rabbi but our chair Prof Naomi Tadmor leads our services using the liberal machzor. She would be happy to lead your service – contact her at n.tadmor@lancaster.ac.uk – or contact the central office of Liberal Judaism and ask if they can send a rabbi. And we hope your ceremony goes brilliantly whatever you choose. Do get in touch if we can help with anything else.

I am a primary school teacher at Sandylands School in Morecambe and I was wondering if you knew anyone who would be willing to visit our school and talk to year 5 children about The Torah and Ten Commandments. Thank you.
