Art of Fear : Southbank Centre

Art of Fear is the sixth weekend at Southbank Centre’s year-long The Rest Is Noise festival. In two days of talks, screenings, music and more we’re looking at the chilling impact of dictators using art to control their subjects and at some of the music which emerged from the destruction and devastation of World War II.

There’ll be music from Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Stravinsky; talks on how music was woven into the Nazi regime and on theRussian political landscape of the 30s, 40s and 50s; screenings of We Want the Light: The Jews and German Music as well as a documentary on the composer Carl Orff, who was wracked with guilt about his behaviour during Hitler’s Germany; and much much more. Concerts include Music from Terezin and Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, written when the composer was a POW in a German camp.
