The first formal community was formed in Derby at the end of the 19th century. A cemetery was also established.
However the Derby Hebrew Congregation held its last service in 1986.
It was decided to hand over the community’s Torah scrolls to surrounding congregations. Nottingham Liberal Synagogue was given one of them.
We understand there are still a small number of Jewish people living in Derby.
Holocaust Memorial Day
The Derby group has been in place since 2001.
It is funded from private donations, and is supported by the Mayor of Derby, Derby Cathedral, local community groups, and individuals. There is a week of events surrounding the 27th January each year.
