Whitby get Jewish Mayor
Dr Stacey Daniels has become the first Jewish mayor of Whitby, the small fishing port in North Yorkshire - the Jewish Chronicle reports.
Dr Daniels and his wife are believed to be the only practicing Jews in the town, but still maintain a full Jewish way of life and attend Hull synagogue as well as being members of synagogues in Nottingham. The Daniels say that the internet is also imortant in helping them keep in touch with all things Jewish.

If anyone reading this has any information regarding the history of any Jews living in Whitby in mid-late 19th Century, (Whitby North Yorkshire) please e-mail me at susie AT clairvoyant-art.co.uk
I have been trying to find out about this for a number of years with no success. This is of personal interest to me as I am trying to trace a lady whose first name was Mathilde (or Mathilda) who I believe was Jewish and lived in Whitby around 1840s. Please help if you have any information.

My ancestor Martin Taylor married a Rebeccah (spelling not relevant) White in 1749 in Fylingdales church near Whitby. Prior to the nonconformist movement later in that century I have only come across the name Rebecca used in Jewish families . Could she have been Jewish living in or near Whitby early 18th century? Or am I just mistaken?
Shalom
