Sheffield & District Reform Jewish Congregation

We are a small Congregation based in Sheffield, in the North of England, UK.

We formed in 1989 from a nucleus of members of Sinai Synagogue in Leeds living in the Sheffield area – assisted by Rabbi Walter Rothschild (then the Rabbi at Sinai Synagogue, Leeds).

We are affiliated to MRJ (the Movement for Reform Judaism) – and generally follow their pattern of services.

Saturday 3rd June

Arrive from 4.30pm for tea and biscuits

Study session 1: 4.45 - 6.00pm
RADICAL READINGS OF RUTH - Why is the Book of Ruth such a subversive text? What does this text have to tell us about refugees, intermarriage and sexuality and why do we read it on Shavuot? Is Ruth the first Jewish convert?

6.00 - 7.00 pm Bring and share meal (cheesecake will be there for dessert)

Study session 2: 7.00 - 8.30pm
OUTSIDERS, INSIDERS: How Ruth can help us think about refugees, how we welcome the stranger, and how power is negotiated at the margins of society.

Study session 3: 8.45pm - 9.30pm
BETWEEN HOLY AND EVERYTHING: As we enter the last hour of Shabbat, we look at the Havdalah ceremony and how we can carry Shabbat into the rest of our week.

RUTH: GENDER AND SEXUALITY: What assumptions do we make when we read a text? Using art and poetry we will look at the ambiguities of gender, love, friendship, women, masculinity and patriarchy that occur throughout Ruth. What power do we have as readers?

Shabbat Shalom!

This weekend join us for an Erev Friday evening Service at Ranmoor from 7:45pm.

And on Sunday join us for the bagel brunch social where we will also explore Miriam Emanuel's Masters Research Project on our sense of identity and belonging without a fixed community space. At Sara's house. Message for address.

    Hello Rabbi,

    Would it be possible to visit the Center and perhaps
    meet with a Couple perhaps even if Physicians like myself ( my field is the equivalent of A&E but in the USA) who might be able to accomodate me for about 4 days until Sat morning ?
